As the Christmas season approaches, we are preparing over 10,000 bulbs, 400 metres of fairy lights, five Christmas trees and reindeers to illuminate Wynyard Park and officially begin the festivities on Friday November 29.
With Christmas around the corner, there is no need to fret if you’re feeling unprepared, we thought we could give you our most festive tips and decorating ideas to make this Christmas extra special.
Christmas is one of the only occasions to welcome glitter, twinkling lights and elaborate centrepieces with open arms, so why not go all out with the decorations and transform your home into a winter wonderland?
Traditional décor usually consists of classic reds and greens, but why not try refreshing your home for the season by taking inspiration straight from these Christmas craft ideas, ranging in style and DIY skills.
Celebrate the season in style with tips from our team.
Decorating tips and ideas:
Design a custom wreath
Create your own wreath by layering pine, spruce, and juniper for a fuller wreath. Add birch twigs, winterberry and silvery pinecones for a touch of sparkle. Add more to it each year and begin a new tradition!
Unique wrapping paper
Add a different feel under your Christmas tree with unique wrapping paper. Try using brown paper or use a potato-based stamp to make you own print. You could even use newspaper this year for something completely different, topped with ribbon and bows. Better yet, both of these wrapping options can be re-cycled, so are more eco friendly than other gift wrap.
DIY advent calendar
Why not try making a DIY advent calendar this year? Gather materials, paints, and decorations to create an advent calendar that has treats, toys or special messages from Santa in decorated muslin craft bags. Velcro to a backdrop and use them again next year, too.
Creating keepsake baubles is a perfect way to make memories with loved ones. Get creative with fillable baubles to decorate or add special photos that you can hang on the tree.
Candles, candles and more candles
Adding luxury candles with Christmas scents such as cinnamon spice, fir tree and fireside can instantly create a festive mood in the home. Our favourite is Winter by The White Company.
Light it up
The trick to a cosy, festive home is lighting, create a warm glow and ambience with warm white twinkling lights, candles and a fire that sets the perfect mood for Christmas Eve and movie nights with the family.
Switch to metals
Use metal accents instead of reds and greens to add a touch of luxury to a Christmas tree, garland or wreath. Using golds, silvers or coppers can change the feel of a room instantly.
