Our Top Five Picnic Locations

Our Top Five Picnic Locations

Summer is finally upon us and what better way to enjoy the sun than with a picnic?

Here, we’ve taken a look at five of the best picnic locations across our beautiful area to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones.

Why not also take a quick snap of the fun too and enter into our Wynyard Park Designs competition while you’re at it?

1. Wynyard Hall Gardens – 2.2 Miles from Wynyard Park

We’ll start close to home with our first entry with one of the most beautiful period buildings in the region. Built between 1822 -1828, Wynyard Hall plays host to 150 acres of historical landscape and features some of the best stately gardens in the region.

Its Woodland Walk has picnic tables along the way and a children’s play area too. Perfect for just popping some sandwiches in a bag and heading over.

Wynyard Hall is also home to the ‘Walled Garden’ which features over 3,000 roses and is decorated with many beautiful water features. The ‘Edible Garden’ is where an assortment fruit and vegetables grow which are used by the chefs of the hotel when creating their dishes.

Entry into the gardens is £6 for adults and £4 for anyone under the age of 13, once purchased these tickets can be used all year.

2. Hardwick Hall – 6.3 Miles from Wynyard Park

Just a short drive from Wynyard Park, Hardwick Hall is an 18th century grade II listed site. Meaning the area has significant historical merit just waiting to be discovered.

The park surrounding the hall is 150 acres and features a number of ‘ruins’ originally built by the owner of the site over 200 years ago and intricately restored in 2010 in a £4.1m scheme.

The park is home to a number of animal habitats, buildings and sculptures so is a perfect place to educate the little ones, or yourself, about the history and wildlife of the area.

Entry is free but parking costs around £3.

3. Preston Park Museum & Grounds – 11 Miles from Wynyard Park

Another former stately home makes our list. Preston Park Museum & Grounds is set in a 100-acre estate with a lot to keep the little ones entertained.

The museum itself is a brilliant way to educate and interest people of all ages. Featuring galleries of treasures from a time gone by to a fully realised Victorian era Highstreet and the walled kitchen garden, which was previously closed off, will be open for the first time this summer.

The grounds of the museum feature beautiful river walks, a jetty to take cruises down the River Tees, a miniature railway and even a daredevil skate park and adventure playground, plus a sandpit with workable diggers for the little ones.

Entry into the museum is £2.50 for adults, £1.50 for concessions and under 5’s are free. All tickets are valid for 12 months from purchase.

4. Crimdon – 13 Miles from Wynyard Park

Located in County Durham on the coast of the North Sea, Crimdon is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the north of England and is a perfect spot for a picnic on the sand.

Take a walk along the clifftops before picking a little cove in one of the bays down below. There’s plenty to explore in the caves and rock pools as well as an extensive beautiful beach.

Crimdon Dene is also a popular spot for bird watching due to the large amount of tern, stonechat, blue tit and wren amongst others.

5. Roseberry Topping - 19 Miles from Wynyard Park

Last but certainly not least. Roseberry topping is the go-to location for stunning panoramic views across the Tees Valley and North Yorkshire.

Reaching a height of 266ft, Roseberry Topping is ideal if you want to give yourself a little challenge before you sit down for a nice picnic lunch.

Located just outside of Great Ayton in the Cleveland Hills, you can treat yourself and the family to an ice cream from the famous Suggits Ice Creams which is located in the quaint village or sit by the beck and watch the ducks swim down the stream.

We’d love to see pictures of you and your loved ones enjoying all our beautiful area has to offer. Don't forget to use the #WynyardParkDesigns hashtag to enter our monthly competition.
